And we leave Palermo

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

We have breakfast. The picture below will give you an indication of the level of this hotel.

Yes canned fruit cocktail.

Last night we asked about their rooftop bar. First of all their rooftop bar was on the second floor of a four story hotel…that should have been our first clue. Then we were told it was closed because of rain.

And how can an inside bar close because of rain! But it did have a view when you parted the drapes.

But I am on a mission. Somewhere in our travels my beautiful pleather (vegan leather) whatever you want to call it - bag started peeling and there were remnant pieces everywhere. I have to replace it! All I see are tourist trap souvenir shops, so I ask the front desk and they tell me there is a leather shop behind the hotel, so we set off.

This one has to go!

Yes, indeed a real leather shop where we meet Giovanni - a third generation leather artison. I wanted smooth leather- and he told me to come back in October, it was the wrong season. So I chose a beautiful orange suede tote - as I had to have something- I couldn’t keep flaking everywhere! Then I bought a small blue crossbody to go inside and Jim got a blue leather belt customized to his size. This shop was a find!

And the black one is abandoned in Palermo.

We leave the hotel at 12:30 when our driver arrives. When I booked the driver they suggested we stop at the castle along the way. It sounded like an interesting break in the 2 hour drive, so I booked it. We arrive at Castle Caccamo at 2 pm, and our driver then tells us the castle opens at 3 pm - but we can walkup the hill and visit the town for an hour. We hike up the hill to find any businesses that might be open are closed until 3 p.m.- so we wander around for 50 minutes and push our luck to hopefully find the castle open. It is our lucky day! We buy our tickets and climb the rocky slope to the castle.

Well Buckingham it is not! Although there was a whole room of Miss Cacamo pictures. Back down the hill and on to the hotel in Cefalu

We check in and are shown to our room - a little darling bungalow off the pool.

And since we haven’t eaten since breakfast - we head down the hill to the hotel’s casual (as opposed to fine dining) restaurant. It’s a beautiful setting right above the water - but not so spectacular on the food. Of course we have been totally spoiled after the dinner in Naples.

And we call it a day.
