First Day in Cairo -on our own

Slept thru breakfast..after a lite lunch we decided to take a walk. Walking in Cairo is not for the faint of heart. The concierge gave us a map and pointed out all the hotels on the map. Turns out those are both landmarks and potential safety zones. He warned us to be careful crossing the streets (great advice) and to ignore people trying to talk to us – another piece of good advice. So off we went.

I really wanted to go down one of the streets on the other side of this monument, but it was too wild to try to cross. 6 roads converged here – all at least 4 cars wide…..and everyone honking.

The good news is that there are police everywhere, basically on every corner. And yes we were followed by plenty of men trying to be “helpful”, they got quite upset when we told them no thank you.

Every hotel has a dog that sniffs around the entire car and in the trunk. All the dogs we saw were German Shepard.

Our hotel has a golden retriever guard dog – I’ve gotta get a picture of him. He looks like a family pet, not a guard dog.

So this is Tim – the bomb sniffing dog at our hotel. That’s him laying at my feet in the last photo. He’s very sweet – but he evidently has a good nose.

The walk wasn’t pretty or safe so after a couple of miles we made our way back to the hotel. Enough adventure for one day.

Tomorrow the tours begin and they are non-stop.
