How exciting… but such a surprise. We start off at 8 o’clock and it is 34 degrees out. None of us packed for this. Really wished we had mittens. And then we find out that Petra is actually 25 square miles.
We walk thru the gate and start walking.
And walking
And walking
And about a mile down we get a glimpse
The Treasury
And then we walk on
To the amphitheater
And we walk on…to the Royal Tombs
And beyond
But we aren’t really warming up – so we head back. This ended up being 5 1/2 mile walk, so refreshing.
And as much as I hate to admit this just before we turned to head back I stumbled on a large rock embedded in the ground and down I went. Had to be the day I wore my white pants. Fortunately it was mostly sand where I crashed, so no real damage. And here I had been doing so well – I had conquered so many treacherous walking paths every day. But at least it is towards the end of the trip. And I suffered no damage! My watch wanted to call 911 – not sure how that would have worked in a canyon in a foreign country. So glad I didn’t need it.
We pick up our luggage and head on to Wadi Rum. It’s about a 90 minute drive. We are met by our “Jeep” driver, Mr. Friday.
We load into the back of a pick up and take off thru the desert.
And we arrive at our “dome” where we are glamping for the night.
We have dinner at the camp where they have cooked a dinner buried in the ground. It is layers of beef and lamb, vegetables, then a layer of chicken, and finally rice.
And we call it a night
Sunset from our room. Look closely — so many stars out. Moon from our room
Up early in the morning for our last marathon day.
